The Saudi authorities have summoned detainee Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Ghamdi to the Court of Appeal again amid fears of a repeat of Al-Shahri’s fate
Informed sources told the SANAD Human Rights Organisation that the Saudi authorities have summoned detainee Mohammed Al-Ghamdi to appear before the Court of Appeal again this week. This development comes after several sources reported that the death sentence issued against him was previously overturned, yet he has not been released.
SANAD Human Rights Organisation expresses its concern that Al-Ghamdi may face the same fate as detainee Dhafer Al-Shahri, who was executed by the Saudi government on August 24, 2024, due to tweets he posted on social media. Al-Shahri had shared the same cell with Al-Ghamdi.
It is noteworthy that the Saudi authorities arrested Mohammed Al-Ghamdi in July 2022 due to tweets he posted from an anonymous account on Platform X, which had fewer than ten followers. In July 2023, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced him to death, but this sentence was overturned last August, yet he has not been released.
