SANAD Human Rights Organization calls for disclosure of the fate of retired officer Nawaf bin Shuayfan Al-Azma after nine years of enforced disappearance

This October marks the ninth anniversary of the arrest and enforced disappearance of retired Saudi officer Nawaf bin Shuayfan Al-Azma, who was detained by Saudi authorities in October 2016 after posting a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) calling for the removal of then–Defense Minister and current Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Although his tweet fell within the bounds of legally and internationally protected freedom of expression, Saudi authorities arrested and forcibly disappeared him. Since then, they have refused to disclose his whereabouts or grant him any of his basic legal rights.

SANAD Human Rights Organization expresses its deep concern over the continued enforced disappearance of Nawaf bin Shuayfan Al-Azma and calls on the Saudi authorities to immediately reveal his fate and place of detention, release him unconditionally, and provide full compensation for the harm he has suffered. SANAD also urges the Saudi government to end all forms of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and human rights violations against its citizens.
