Saudi Authorities Continue Arbitrary Arrests and Detain Dr. Sami Al-Waked
The Saudi authorities persist in their repressive campaign targeting academics and activists, as they have recently arrested Dr. Sami Saleh Al-Waked Al-Otaibi, along with several of his students, eight days ago. As of now, Sanad has been unable to determine the reasons behind his arrest.
This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on academics and intellectuals in Saudi Arabia, aimed at silencing free voices and restricting freedom of expression and opinion.
While the authorities attempt to whitewash their human rights record by releasing a limited number of detainees, hundreds remain imprisoned for expressing their opinions or taking political stances. Furthermore, the recent releases have been conditional, imposing strict restrictions on those freed, including travel bans, media blackouts, and a prohibition on discussing the violations they endured, with the constant threat of re-arrest if they violate these conditions.
Sanad Human Rights Organization calls for the immediate release of Dr. Sami Al-Waked and all prisoners of conscience and urges the Saudi authorities to end their ongoing human rights violations. Sanad also calls on human rights organizations and international bodies to pressure Saudi authorities to uphold fundamental rights and ensure justice and transparency in their legal processes.
