On the Sixth Anniversary of His Arrest: SANAD Organization Calls for the Release of Dr. Nasser Al-Omar and Condemns Medical Negligence
These days mark the sixth anniversary of the arrest of Dr. Nasser Al-Omar in August 2018, following a tweet he posted on Twitter expressing his opinion on social changes in Saudi Arabia. Despite his advanced age and chronic illnesses, the Saudi authorities increased his sentence from 10 years to 30 years.
In this context, Dr. Al-Omar has been subjected to numerous severe violations, including deliberate medical neglect, despite being over seventy years old, which has resulted in the loss of hearing in one ear. He has also been subjected to solitary confinement and has been denied legal representation or contact with his family, further exacerbating the severity of the violations against him.
SANAD Organisation for Human Rights strongly condemns the disgraceful and condemnable practices of the Saudi authorities in their treatment of prisoners of conscience, including medical neglect and physical and psychological abuse. These practices constitute crimes against humanity and must be stopped immediately. SANAD Organisation calls on the international community and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to save the life of Dr. Nasser Al-Omar and all prisoners of conscience in Saudi Arabia and to ensure they receive the necessary medical care. The organization also demands the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Nasser Al-Omar and all prisoners of conscience, and calls for holding the Saudi authorities accountable for their ongoing human rights violations.
