SANAD Organisation for Human Rights warns Bulgarian authorities against the deportation of activist Abdulrahman Al-Khaldi to Saudi Arabia, due to a real danger threatening his life.
SANAD organisation appealed to all relevant parties and the international community for urgent intervention to save his life from this imminent danger, and called for effective steps to prevent his deportation, highlighting the severity of these practices that threaten the lives of activists and undermine human rights.
Al-Khaldi, who was politically active in Saudi Arabia, moved to Turkey fearing arrest. With his passport expiring, Al-Khaldi was forced to leave Turkey in 2021, trekking through forests to Bulgaria to seek protection in the European Union.
However, in May of last year, Bulgarian authorities refused to grant him political asylum due to his inability to prove that he would face persecution in his home country, as confirmed by a member of his defense team who preferred to remain anonymous. Al-Khaldi is currently awaiting a final decision on his deportation to Riyadh.
