Dr. Salem Al-Daini Enters Ninth Year in Detention — Sanad Calls for His Release

Saudi academic Dr. Salem Al-Daini has completed eight years behind bars, entering his ninth year since his arrest on 12 September 2017, just days after being dismissed from his post as Deputy Minister of Labor.

Since his detention, Al-Daini has endured severe violations, including prolonged solitary confinement, lengthy arbitrary detention without being brought before a court, and travel bans imposed on his entire family. He also faced vague and baseless charges from the Public Prosecution, such as “funding entities outside Saudi Arabia” and “criticizing the ruling authorities.”

Dr. Al-Daini is a well-known academic and social figure in the Kingdom. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University in the United States and serves as a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He also holds a diploma in counseling using cognitive behavioral therapy and is recognized as a pioneer in volunteer work through his contributions to establishing and training several charitable organizations, in addition to his role in youth development through lectures and training courses.

Sanad Human Rights Organization calls on Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Dr. Salem Al-Daini, stressing that his continued detention since 2017 constitutes a blatant violation of his fundamental rights. Sanad further urges his full compensation following release.
