Release of Dr. Lina Al-Sharif After Four Years of Arbitrary Detention
According to human rights and media sources, Saudi authorities have released Dr. Lina Al-Sharif, a physician and human rights defender, after four years of arbitrary detention, which began on May 26, 2021, due to tweets in which she criticized the human rights situation in the Kingdom.
Following her arrest, Dr. Lina was subjected to enforced disappearance for several months, during which she was denied contact with her family and was not allowed legal representation.
Sanad Human Rights Organization welcomes the news of Lina Al-Sharif’s release and congratulates her and her family. However, it stresses that her release does not erase the injustices and violations she endured, nor does it absolve the authorities of accountability for her prolonged, unlawful detention.
Sanad reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience in Saudi Arabia and urges an end to the use of the judiciary and security services to suppress free expression and persecute peaceful activists.
