Nawaf bin Shaifan Al-Azma: 8 Years of Enforced Disappearance Due to a Tweet
By October 2024, retired Saudi officer Nawaf bin Shaifan Al-Azma will have spent eight years in enforced disappearance in Saudi prisons, following his arrest in October 2016 over a tweet on his X account (formerly Twitter).
In the tweet, Al-Azma called for the removal of Mohammed bin Salman from his position as Minister of Defense, an act that falls under legally protected freedom of expression. However, the Saudi government arrested and forcibly disappeared him, an act that constitutes a crime against humanity.
SANAD Human Rights Organization calls on the Saudi authorities to reveal Al-Azma’s fate, release him unconditionally, provide appropriate compensation, and cease their human rights violations and unlawful actions.
