The twelfth anniversary of the arrest of journalist Wajdi Al-Ghazzawi coincides with the end of his sentence
These days mark the twelfth anniversary of the arrest of Saudi journalist Wajdi Al-Ghazzawi in August 2012, which also coincides with the end of his sentence. Al-Ghazzawi was arrested for speaking out against corruption and the embezzlement of public funds in the country through his television program “Fadfada,” which aimed to raise awareness about human rights and political issues.
It is noteworthy that in 2014, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced him to 12 years in prison, banned him from traveling for 20 years, and permanently prohibited him from appearing in the media. The Saudi judiciary charged Al-Ghazzawi with damaging the reputation of Saudi Arabia, producing materials that distort public order and morals, and inciting sedition.
Wajdi Al-Ghazzawi is a media personality who served as a religious observer in the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques and the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, as well as the director of the religious affairs department at the National Guard Hospital in Jeddah.
SANAD Organisation for Human Rights calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Wajdi Al-Ghazzawi. It also urges all human rights activists and organizations to pressure the Saudi authorities for his immediate and unconditional release.
