Second Anniversary of the Arrest of Retired Teacher Mohammed Al-Ghamdi
As of June 11, 2024, retired teacher Mohammed Al-Ghamdi has spent two years in Saudi prisons due to five tweets from an anonymous account followed by only nine accounts. Consequently, he was sentenced to death.
Despite Saudi Crown Prince revealing in an interview with Fox News his embarrassment over the death sentence against Al-Ghamdi for tweets, Al-Ghamdi has not been allowed to appeal yet. SANAD Organisation disclosed new information indicating that Al-Ghamdi was shackled and transferred to Riyadh for retrial. However, after several weeks in Al-Ha’ir Prison, he was not presented to any judge and was returned to Dhahban Prison in Jeddah. During this period, Al-Ghamdi faced medical neglect, resulting in a seizure and a broken tooth.
SANAD Organisation for Human Rights expresses its deep concern over the continued detention of Mohammed Al-Ghamdi and calls on Saudi authorities for his immediate release. The organization also urges the international community and human rights organizations to pressure the Saudi government to end these violations and renews its call for the release of all prisoners of conscience in the country.
