Maha Al-Huwaiti Completes 2,000 Days Behind Bars Over Tweets

Maha Al-Huwaiti has spent 2,000 days behind bars since her arrest in February 2021 over tweets criticizing the rising cost of living and others mourning Abdulrahim Al-Huwaiti. She was later sentenced to 23 years in prison.

According to human rights organizations, Al-Huwaiti was arrested in February 2021 after State Security and emergency forces raided her home. She was arrested in front of her five children, the youngest of whom was only four months old at the time.

Al-Huwaiti was initially sentenced to one year in prison, which was later increased to three years. In August 2022, she was retried before the Specialized Criminal Court, which sentenced her to 23 years in prison.

SANAD Human Rights Organization calls on Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Maha Al-Huwaiti and provide fair compensation to her and her family for the harm caused by her detention. SANAD also calls for an end to violations against members of the Huwaitat tribe and the release of all those detained.
