Saudi authorities release Mr. Saleh Al-Shami after nearly two years of arbitrary detention
The Saudi authorities have released Mr. Saleh Al-Shami, a prominent 89-year-old Syrian scholar, following his detention since January 2023 without any legal justification or formal charges. His arbitrary detention, in violation of international and humanitarian laws, constitutes a crime against humanity, particularly given his advanced age and deteriorating health condition.
During his detention, Mr. Al-Shami’s health severely deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization in May 2023. Despite his critical condition, he was returned to prison, further jeopardizing his well-being.
Sanad Organization for Human Rights welcomes the release of Mr. Saleh Al-Shami. However, it stresses that this step does not absolve the authorities of responsibility for the rights violations he suffered during his detention. The organization urges Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all prisoners of conscience who remain arbitrarily detained.
