Arrest of Security College Student Muhannad Al-Ghamdi Over an Old Tweet from His First Year of High School
SANAD Human Rights Organization has obtained information regarding the arrest of citizen and Security College student Muhannad Abdulrahman Mohammed Ghannam Al-Ghamdi, which occurred approximately two years ago. The story of his arrest dates back to his time studying at the Security College, where he had advanced significantly in his academic career and presented himself as a loyal security officer dedicated to the state. He even passionately defended the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with great enthusiasm and loyalty.
However, Saudi regime-affiliated electronic committees were able to retrieve an old tweet from his Twitter account, posted when he was a young first-year high school student, in which he criticized certain social and political conditions. Despite the fact that Muhannad had long forgotten this tweet and had shifted from being a critic to a staunch supporter of the state, he was arrested and dismissed from the Security College.
Despite his distinguished family’s efforts, as part of the prominent Ghamid tribe, to intervene and mediate in his case, their attempts were rejected by the authorities. The family was summoned and forced to sign a pledge not to interfere or mediate on his behalf.
The arrest of young Muhannad Al-Ghamdi, over an old tweet, is a heinous crime that exposes the extent of oppression and vengeance practiced by Saudi authorities. SANAD Human Rights Organization demands the immediate and unconditional release of Muhannad, the dismissal of all charges against him, and warns against any potential conviction in his case.
