Arrest of Ghassan Bahaa Eddin Zureik: Strange Charges and Harsh Sentences
SANAD Organisation for Human Rights expresses its deep concern about the continued detention of Ghassan Bahaa Eddin Zureik, the Executive Director of the project “With my hands I drew its letters and wrote its words.“
Zureik faces bizarre accusations that do not rise to the level of crimes, and he suffers from severe violations and harsh sentences, the most notable of which is a 13-year prison term merely for meeting with an advisor to the Turkish President.
Zureik’s arrest embodies a worrying pattern of persecution of freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia, where many individuals have been detained due to their ties with Turkey, even after the improvement of relations between the two countries.
SANAD Organisation calls on the Saudi authorities to immediately release Ghassan Bahaa Eddin Zureik, drop all charges against him, and ensure respect for freedom of expression and international human rights standards.
