Nine Years Behind Bars: Academic Mubarak Al-Zuair Remains Arbitrarily Detained

Dr. Mubarak bin Saeed Al-Zuair, an academic at Imam University, has spent nine years behind bars in Saudi Arabia since his arrest in October 2017 over his human rights activism and advocacy for detainees. He remains arbitrarily detained to this day.

Dr. Al-Zuair had previously been arrested several times over his reformist writings and human rights awareness papers. He was also dismissed from the university and barred from teaching. In addition, he appeared before secret court hearings whose details have never been disclosed. SANAD Human Rights Organization has yet to receive any information about a court ruling issued against him.

SANAD Human Rights Organization stresses that Dr. Mubarak Al-Zuair’s continued detention constitutes a flagrant violation of fundamental rights and freedoms. It calls on Saudi authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally, restore all his rights, and provide appropriate compensation for the harm and serious violations he has suffered.
