For a Tweet: Journalist Sami Al-Thubaiti Completes Nine Years Behind Bars

These days mark the ninth anniversary of the detention of Saudi journalist Sami Al-Thubaiti, who has remained in Saudi authorities’ custody since September 12, 2017, over a tweet in which he called for reconciliation, rejecting divisions, and resolving differences during the Saudi-Qatar crisis.

Since his arrest, Al-Thubaiti has been subjected, according to documentation by Sanad Human Rights Organization, to violations including enforced disappearance and denial of a fair trial. The organization has not received any information about his whereabouts or condition for a long period.

Sanad Human Rights Organization calls on the Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release journalist Sami Al-Thubaiti and all prisoners of conscience, guarantee their fundamental rights, and hold those responsible for the violations they have suffered accountable. The organization also calls for appropriate compensation for Al-Thubaiti for the harm he has endured during his years in detention.
