Release of Journalist Saeed Al-Shahrani After Five Years in Detention
Saudi authorities have released journalist Saeed Al-Shahrani, who was arrested in late 2019, after he spent five years behind bars.
According to human rights sources, Al-Shahrani had been sentenced to 16 years in prison, but was released recently after serving part of his sentence.
Al-Shahrani, a Saudi journalist, previously worked for a Saudi TV channel and was known for his active presence in the media field inside the Kingdom.
SANAD Human Rights Organization welcomes the release of Saeed Al-Shahrani but stresses that this step remains insufficient. The organization reiterates its call on Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all prisoners of conscience and to end the ongoing policy of arbitrary arrests and repressive practices targeting activists, journalists, and defenders of rights and freedoms.
