Release of Activist Asma Al-Subaie After Nearly Four Years of Arbitrary Detention
According to human rights and media sources, Saudi authorities have released human rights activist Asma Al-Subaie, who was arrested in June 2021 over tweets advocating for women’s rights and speaking out against domestic violence.
A security force had raided her home in Riyadh, arrested her, and confiscated all her electronic devices. During her detention, Asma faced multiple violations, including enforced disappearance and sexual harassment. The authorities also coerced her into appearing on state-run media in an attempt to whitewash their image, which is marred by ongoing repression and unlawful arrests.
Sanad Human Rights Organization congratulates Asma Al-Subaie and her family on her long-overdue release after years of injustice and detention. The organization considers this a positive step that must be followed by the release of all prisoners of conscience in Saudi Arabia.
Sanad reiterates its call on the Saudi authorities to end their repressive practices and to immediately and unconditionally release all individuals detained solely for peacefully expressing their opinions or defending human rights.
