Six Years of Injustice and Medical Neglect: Osama Sohail Pays the Price for Free Expression

These days mark the sixth anniversary of journalist Osama Sohail’s arrest in January 2019. Detained over tweets in which he expressed his opinions, Sohail has been serving an arbitrary eight-year prison sentence. During his detention, he has faced several abuses by prison authorities, including difficulties in maintaining contact with his family and neglect of his medical needs.

The primary charges against him stem from tweets that fall far short of justifying his imprisonment. The public prosecutor described these tweets as incitement to terrorism and attempts to destabilize national security. However, SANAD Human Rights Organization affirms that these accusations are baseless and unsupported by credible evidence.

SANAD firmly opposes Osama Sohail’s continued detention and calls on authorities to release him immediately. The organization stresses that he should be granted all his legal and human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and family contact. It also urges the cessation of all forms of abuse he has endured in prison.
