SANAD organisation calls for the immediate release of Egyptian lawyer Islam Sobhi and condemns his arbitrary detention in Saudi Arabia
Saudi authorities have continued to detain Egyptian lawyer Islam Sobhi since June 23, 2024, following his publication of a video revealing deaths during the Hajj disaster. Islam suffers from cancer, and his health condition is unstable, as confirmed by his family, which exacerbates the danger of his continued detention without regard for humanitarian and health standards.
In a video statement, Islam’s wife appealed to the Saudi authorities to release her husband and revealed the difficulties she faced in appointing a lawyer for him in Saudi Arabia. Only one lawyer agreed to represent him, demanding an exorbitant fee exceeding one million.
SANAD Human Rights Organisation expresses its full solidarity with lawyer Islam Osama Sobhi and his family, and strongly condemns this arbitrary detention, which violates the most basic principles of human rights. The continued detention of a person suffering from a serious illness like Islam, without regard for his health condition, can only be described as cruel and inhumane, especially in the absence of any legal justification for his arrest.
SANAD Human Rights Organisation issues a stern call to the Saudi authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of Islam Osama Sobhi. The organization considers that failure to release him constitutes another crime added to the record of human rights violations committed by these authorities, who will bear full responsibility for any further deterioration in his health condition.
