In Saudi Arabia, Nasser Abdulrahim Al-Ghamdi sentenced to 13 years in prison for tweets

In a continued crackdown on freedom of expression, Saudi authorities arrested citizen Nasser Abdulrahim Al-Ghamdi in September 2022 for exercising his natural right to peacefully express his opinion on the X platform.

According to sources close to Al-Ghamdi, his arrest was due to several tweets he posted on his account on the X platform, which included criticisms of the Ministry of Health’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, calls to address the unemployment issue, and criticisms of the activities of electronic bots in suppressing hashtags that express societal demands.

Informed sources told SANAD Organisation that the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced Nasser Abdulrahim Al-Ghamdi to 13 years in prison late last year due to several tweets on his personal account on the X platform.

SANAD Organisation for Human Rights condemns the arrest of Nasser Al-Ghamdi, asserting that it is arbitrary and violates his fundamental rights. The organization calls for his immediate and unconditional release and urges an end to the terrifyingly increasing repression of freedom of expression in the kingdom.
