Maha Al-Huwaiti: A Saudi mother jailed for 23 years over two tweets about the cost of living and forced displacement!

In February 2021, the Saudi authorities arrested Maha Al-Huwaiti following a tweet on the “x” platform about the cost of living, in addition to another tweet in which she mourned Abdulrahim Al-Huwaiti, who was killed by Saudi security forces during the forced displacement of the Huwaitat tribe.

Maha Al-Huwaiti was arrested brutally as her home was stormed by the State Security and Emergency forces, and she was arrested in front of her five children, the youngest of whom was four months old.

In a clear example of the frailty of trials in Saudi Arabia, Maha Sulaiman Al-Quraani Al-Huwaiti was initially sentenced to one year in prison, which was then increased to three years. In August 2022, she was retried, and a third and most severe verdict was issued by the Specialized Criminal Court, sentencing her to 23 years in prison.

The human rights organization, Sanad, demands the immediate release of Maha Al-Huwaiti, the annulment of the unfair verdict against her, and guarantees that she will not be subjected to any further harassment or other violations.
