SANAD has followed the candidate nomination process for the Interpol presidential elections which will be held at Interpol’s General Secretariat meeting, scheduled to take place on the 23rd – 25th of November 2021 in Istanbul.
Among the candidates is Ahmad Ar-Risi, Director of the Ministry of the Interior in the United Arab Emirates. Ar-Risi has been accused of perpetrating torture against its citizens and of human rights violations in the Emirates.
SANAD strongly opposes his nomination as he stands accused before the international community of these violations and because he is a part an authority that commits severe human rights violations. If his nomination is successful, it will mean an increase in human rights violations especially against human rights activists and those who call for rights and freedoms.
SANAD calls upon all member states, international bodies and human rights organisations to oppose this nomination and to stand firm against Ar-Risi being appointed to this post.
