Nearly Eight Years Since the Arrest of Academic Mubarak Al-Zuaer

Dr. Mubarak bin Saeed Al-Zuaer, an academic at Imam University, is nearing his eighth year in Saudi prisons since his arrest in October 2017 over his human rights advocacy and support for detainees. He remains under arbitrary detention to this day.

His current detention was preceded by multiple previous arrests due to his reformist writings and human rights papers. He was dismissed from his university post and barred from teaching, in addition to being subjected to secret trial sessions with no disclosed verdict to date.

Sanad Human Rights Organization affirms that Dr. Al-Zuaer’s continued detention constitutes a blatant violation of fundamental rights and freedoms, and calls on Saudi authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally, restore his full rights, and compensate him for the severe harm and abuses he has endured.
