Saudi Authorities Continue to Detain Lawyer Muteb Dhafir Al-Omari Over Tweets

Saudi authorities continue to detain lawyer Muteb Dhafir Al-Omari since 2018, due to tweets he posted under the account “Future Readings” on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), in which he shared his views on the future of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to information obtained by Sanad Human Rights Organization, Al-Omari has been subjected to serious violations during his detention, including physical assault, electrical torture, deprivation of contact with his family, and being held for two years without trial.

In early 2022, the Saudi Court of Appeals sentenced Al-Omari to seven years in prison.

Sanad Human Rights Organization calls for the immediate and unconditional release of lawyer Muteb Dhafir Al-Omari, demands guarantees for his physical and psychological safety, and urges an end to all forms of repression and persecution related to freedom of expression. The organization strongly condemns the continued violations of basic rights by Saudi authorities — especially the rights to freedom of opinion and expression and fair trial guarantees.
