Ziyad Al-Sufyani: Doctor and Wikipedia Editor Behind Bars

The Saudi authorities continue to arbitrarily detain Wikipedia editor and doctor Ziyad Al-Sufyani since September 2020, on charges related to his right to freedom of expression.

The Specialized Criminal Court initially sentenced Ziyad Al-Sufyani to eight years in prison based on accusations related to freedom of expression.

It is worth noting that Ziyad Al-Sufyani graduated from medical school and has been editing Arabic content on Wikipedia since 2006. He was promoted to an administrative role in 2011. He was arrested in 2020 alongside fellow Wikipedia editor Osama Khaled, who is serving a prison sentence of more than 30 years for the same reason.

SANAD Human Rights Organisation calls on the Saudi authorities to release Ziyad Al-Sufyani immediately and unconditionally, to compensate him appropriately, and to free all prisoners of conscience in Saudi Arabia.
