Mr. Saleh Al-Shami (89 years old): A Hostage to Arbitrary Detention in Saudi Prisons
Mr. Saleh Al-Shami, an elderly Syrian scholar, remains detained in the prisons of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since the beginning of 2023, without any formal charges being made against him or being brought to trial.
Mr. Al-Shami is 89 years old, and his health has severely deteriorated during his detention, necessitating his transfer to a hospital in May 2023. Nevertheless, he was returned to prison shortly after, despite the continued decline of his health condition.
SANAD Organisation for Human Rights, strongly condemns the ongoing detention of Mr. Saleh Al-Shami, the elderly Syrian scholar, in Saudi prisons without any legal basis or fair trial. The treatment of Mr. Al-Shami by the Saudi authorities constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and represents a disturbing pattern of arbitrary arrests targeting the elderly and peaceful activists in Saudi Arabia. SANAD Organisation demands the immediate release of Mr. Al-Shami and the guarantee of his right to appropriate medical care.
