Continued detention of Dr. Omar Al-Muqbil for more than 4 years.
Dr. Omar Al-Muqbil continues to be detained for more than four years, serving a four-year prison sentence.
Al-Muqbil’s arrest came in September 2019 following a sermon in which he criticized the Entertainment Authority. The Specialized Criminal Court initially sentenced him to only six months in prison, but then the Supreme Court in Riyadh added an additional four years.
Al-Muqbil is a Saudi Imam and preacher, and an academic who holds a Ph.D. from Imam University in Riyadh. He worked as a teaching assistant at Qassim University and then as a professor of Prophetic Traditions at the same university. He has numerous recorded and televised sermons and lessons, as well as many different publications.
The continued detention of Dr. Omar Al-Muqbil occurs amidst the repression in Saudi Arabia against human rights activists, political opponents, and those expressing their opinions.
For its part, SANAD Organisation for Human Rights calls on the government to release Dr. Omar Al-Muqbil and to free all detainees of conscience and innocent activists.
